Hurricane Season Officially Begins Today — Are You Prepared?

DAN Reminds You to Incorporate Trip Insurance into Your Travel Plans

June 1 marks the official start to the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season, and forecasters are predicting it will be an active one. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting a 70 percent probability of up to 23 named storms developing between now and Nov. 30, 2010; of those, eight to 14 of the storms are potential hurricanes.

However, dire storm predictions are no reason to put travel plans on hold. A few simple preparations can get you ready to contend with the challenges of travel during hurricane season, and at the top of that list is DAN® Trip Insurance.

DAN Trip Insurance is offered on a per-trip basis. Premiums are based solely on the cost of the trip and are not affected by the traveler’s age. Policies are available for all kinds of travel and are intended to compliment the benefits offered through DAN Membership such as TravelAssist® and specific elements of the DAN Preferred Dive Accident Insurance Plan.

DAN Trip Insurance can be purchased up to 24 hours prior to departure; however, it’s important to know that in the case of storms, once a storm has been named, it’s too late. If you’re planning to travel this hurricane season, plan to add your trip insurance early.

If you’re not traveling but live in a hurricane-prone area, you still need to plan ahead and prepare for the season. Take the time to formulate a response plan to execute in the event your home or area is hit by a storm; make sure every member of your family is aware of the plan, too. Put together your emergency supply kit now as well; the middle of a hurricane is not when you want to be searching for batteries.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1–Nov. 30; traditionally, 97 percent of the year’s hurricanes take place during the six-month period. Again, hurricane season is no reason to stay home, but it is reason to ensure you’ve protected both yourself and your travel.
